Should the grandmaster title be scrapped?

 Think about it- is the Grandmaster title that relevant anymore?


The issue with the chess grandmaster title is that it was created (I believe the first grandmaster titles were given in 1948) before Elo ratings were a thing.


For me, Elo ratings are a better and more accurate measurement of a players value. 


My argument for scrapping the Grandmaster title, and I would do the same for other titles as well, is simply that the rating system is accurate enough. Other sports like tennis, darts, cricket, football, don't have title systems. They rely on rankings alone.


So lets scrap the titles.

                             Ashwath Kaushik could be the next super talent, but is there a dark side?  It seems every week there is a new tale of a child defeating a Grandmaster at chess and I myself lost to 9 year old Supratit Banerjere in the Hastings blitz event. I think during the course of my career I've rarely lost to someone that young, although I did become part of a record once when Murugan Thiruchelvam beat me in a Richmond rapidplay when he was only ten and at the time became the youngest ever to defeat an International master; although nowadays, such a result would be commonplace. I've mentioned recently that I think this generation of eight year olds is the most promising to emerge since the 1990 vintage of Magnus Carlsen, Sergey Karjakin, Ian Nepomniachtchi, David Howell and others.  Ironically it is Davids record of beating a GM that was the one to fall to Ashwath, and it is reasonable to assume that there will be many other records that will fall to this stella

Is there a solution to rating deflation?

  The words on Oleg Korneev's Facebook are very clear: "Do you actually understand what his rating is for a chess player? This is his business card, capital, basically. I receive in packs of standard emails from chess tournaments organizers and club management, where invitations are denied or offered disgusting conditions, motivating it by a low rating (now I'm below 2500). Let's conclude: the loss of rating for chess professionals turns into the loss of chess earnings. Elo-deflation is robbing chess professionals." Battle Royal

A few days ago I played in the four nations chess league, and although it wasn't as disappointing as Hastings, in some ways it still felt that way. The saturday game went ok though. I drew with super talent Shreyas Royal with the Black pieces.                                     Delta hotel warwick hosted the second 4NCL weekend.  As far as I can ascertain Shreyas is working pretty hard on chess and he seems to have been earmarked as a possible successor to the likes of Michael Adams, as being a dominant player in English chess. Of course the ambition should be to ultimately compete at the world level, not just beat up fellow British players in tournaments like the English championship and British championship, but it is not difficult to imagine Shreyas snapping up a lot of home titles, just as Adams has done.
